Beam-beam with a Few Long Range Encounters at Long Distance*

چکیده

The high nominal luminosity of the LHC requires a large number of bunches spaced by about 25 ns. To prevent more than one head-on collision in each interaction region, a total crossing angle of 0.285 mrad is necessary, and the bunches experience around 30 long range (LR) interactions per IP with at mean separation of 9.5 σ. For the LHC luminosity upgrade, there are two possible scenarios: the early separation scheme and low Piwinski angle (LPA) scheme. In the early separation scheme, a few long range interactions need to be tolerated, this paper the discuss the possibility of having a few LR encounters at a minimum separation smaller than the 9 σ, and present observations from other hadron machines with a smaller beam separation.

Long-Range Beam–Beam Compensation Using Wires

At the LHC, the effect of unavoidable long-range beam–beam collisions reduces the dynamic aperture, calling for a minimum crossing angle. A wire compensator partially cancels the effect of the long-range collisions, and may allow operation with reduced crossing angle or decreased beta function at the interaction point, thereby increasing the (virtual) peak luminosity. In this chapter, we descri...

High Energy High Intensity Hadron Beams EXPERIMENTS ON LHC LONG-RANGE BEAM-BEAM COMPENSATION IN THE CERN SPS

Long-range beam-beam collisions may limit the dynamic aperture and the beam lifetime in colliders. Their effect can be compensated by a current-carrying wire mounted parallel to the beam. A compensation scheme based on this principle has been proposed for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). To demonstrate its viability, a prototype wire was installed at the CERN SPS in 2002. First successful machi...

Measurements of Collision Offsets and Difference in Vertical Dispersion at the LEP Interaction Points

LEP was operated for the first time in 1995 in “bunch train” mode [1]. Each beam consist of four equally separated trains of three bunches (families) 74 m apart. The bunches are vertically separated before and after the collision points to avoid unwanted encounters. Electrostatic separation generates opposite sign vertical beam dispersion and a residual offsets from long range beam-beam forces ...

Beam-Beam Compensation Schemes

Several techniques have been proposed for compensating the effects of the head-on or long-range beam-beam interaction. These include alternating crossing at several interaction points, electromagnetic wires, electron lenses, and superbunches. I discuss some prominent compensation schemes and their R&D status, with special emphasis on the LHC and its upgrade. 1 HISTORY AND PERSPECTIVE The beam-b...

Observation of Long-range Beam-beam Effect in Rhic and Plans for Compensation∗

At large distances the electromagnetic field of a wire is the same as the field produced by a bunch. Such a longrange beam-beam wire compensator was proposed for the LHC, and single beam tests with wire compensators were successfully done in the SPS. RHIC offers the possibility to test the compensation scheme with colliding beams. We report on measurements of beam losses as a function of transv...
